Should I text him and break the ice or let him come to me?

I have been seeing a guy in medical school over a month now. About two weeks ago, he asked me to be his girlfriend. Last week he had midterm exams so I didn't hear from him at all. That weekend however, he had asked me out previously and canceled the plans, it was my birthday that weekend and Valentine's day on Monday. All weekend he only texted me then we chatted online on Monday. He said he was sorry but that he was busy studying. When I asked him about his plans for Spring Break he said he would be busy studying. He hasn't made any future plans with me. I have not heard from him in 6 days. I don't know what went wrong. Everyone tells me to ignore him (which I have) and just leave it alone and never talk to him again. It is the weekend now and I have heard nothing. Tomorrow is President's Day and I don't want to go on with this whole silent treatment thing forever. I was thinking of texting him and either asking how he is or asking what he is doing tomorrow. Is this okay to do or should I just leave him alone?
