Gas fireplace in an apartment~maintenance guy lit the pilot~tonight it wont go on~how long does it take?

it should be like a heater and go on in 5 minutes or so. maybe the pilot light went out again. it has a safety device that prevents the gas from working if the pilot light goes out.
