Jesus was a very important man. So why is there no information on his physical appearance?

Why did ancient people fail to describe the appearance of Jesus but remembered to write down things he said? I would think that if I had witnessed someone return from the dead and ascend into the sky, I'd be sure to record everything possible about him... And if it was recorded, please describe what he looked like...
